ACP’s Dr. Andy Bowman Named to Roanoke Higher Education Authority Board

OAKWOOD, VA (JUNE 24, 2026) – Appalachian College of Pharmacy Assistant Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Engagement Dr. Andy Bowman has been appointed to serve on the Roanoke Higher Education Authority (RHEA) Board of Trustees.

Bowman, who is also an associate professor of pharmacy at ACP and who serves as Roanoke Higher Education Center site coordinator for ACP, was appointed to the position by ACP President Mickey McGlothlin after Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed legislation adding an Appalachian College of Pharmacy representative to the RHEA. Bowman’s appointment takes effect July 1, 2026.

ACP classes are currently offered at the Roanoke center, in addition to being offered at the college’s Oakwood campus and as a distance learning option at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. Classes began at the Roanoke Center in the fall of 2025. Current ACP students completing their first year of pharmacy school at the Oakwood campus are given the opportunity to apply for the distance learning option in Roanoke for the second year of their education. There, curriculum content is delivered synchronously by electronic means from Oakwood with in-person faculty supervision.

“We congratulate Dr. Bowman as he becomes ACP’s first representative on the Roanoke Higher Education Authority Board,” said ACP Provost and Dean Dr. Susan Mayhew. “Dr. Bowman has been our site coordinator at the Roanoke center since we first partnered with them as a location for one of ACP’s off-campus sites. The Roanoke Center was chosen because of its successful record of serving higher education, as well as for its proximity to numerous undergraduate colleges and universities. Dr. Bowman brings a wealth of experience which will offer perspectives in administration, in the classroom and through his involvement in various state and national pharmacy boards, perspectives which will enhance his service on the RHEA board.”

Bowman joined ACP in April 2024. A graduate of the Campbell University School of Pharmacy in 1993 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, he also completed his undergraduate study at Campbell in the pre-pharmacy curriculum.

For 24 years prior to coming to ACP, Bowman taught at Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences and served as the director of continuing professional education and as a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice. He also previously served as director of continuing education and alumni relations at Campbell University and served on a number of committees including the PharmD Admissions Committee, Faculty & Staff Development Committee, Scholarship Committee, the Athletics Committee, Student Life Committee; and was an advisor to Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Phi Lambda Sigma and the Pre-Pharmacy Club.

Bowman is a former president of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, having served two terms as president during his eight years of service on the board. He was first elected to the board in 2016 and was re-elected to a second term in 2021.

He is also a previous member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Professional Health Program; a member of the American Society for Pharmacy Law; a North Carolina Board of Pharmacy representative on the NC DHHS Medicaid Managed Care Quality Committee and the NC DHHS Opioid Prescription Drug Abuse Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the American Pharmacists Association and the Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) and the American Academy of Colleges of Pharmacy.

His pharmacy work experience includes numerous community pharmacies. He was the first pharmacy manager at the Campbell University Health Center Pharmacy. He is a registered pharmacist in Virginia and in North Carolina and is a certified trainer for APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunizations for Pharmacy Technicians; and an APhA Immunization Training Program facilitator.

He has been published on numerous occasions, including in an “Ask Andy” column of the Senior News, Blue Ridge Edition, in Roanoke; and in the magazine, “U.S. Pharmacist.”  Bowman also provided a weekly radio call-in show, “Ask Andy” on 960AM WFIR in Roanoke in the 1990s.

“As a native of Roanoke, Virginia, I am honored to represent the Appalachian College of Pharmacy on the Roanoke Higher Education Authority Board of Trustees,” Bowman said. “I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members to strengthen educational opportunities and enhance pathways to success for students throughout the greater Roanoke Valley.”
