Dr. Afsana Momen serves as an Assistant Professor in the department of Pharmaceutical sciences.

After earning her medical degree from University of Dhaka, Dr. Momen began her carrier in imaging and trained in the Nuclear Medicine Department of Bangladesh Atomic energy Commission. She further obtained clinical training in imaging at the department of Nuclear Medicine, at University Hospital, Vrije University of Brussels in Belgium under supervision of Dr. Axel Bossuyt. She completed a two years Master’s program in Medical and Pharmaceutical Research from the same university with a thesis on ‘Myocardial Perfusion and Function’ based on nuclear imaging methodology.

Dr. Momen moved to USA and started working as a post-doctoral research fellow at Dr. Lawrence Sinoway’s lab in the Heart and Vascular Institute, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, Pennsylvania. Her research field was focused on the cardiovascular adjustment during exercise in health and disease. Doppler blood flow imaging had been her main research tool. She was later appointed as an instructor and continued her clinical research with Dr. Sinoway in the same field besides teaching medical students the cardiology course.

Dr. Momen was awarded ‘Scientist Development Grant’ from American Heart Association. She was a co-investigator in a number of RO1 research grants from NIH. Additionally, she obtained training in advanced echocardiography imaging at Dr. Ted Abraham’s lab at the department of Cardiology in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Momen was also awarded Fellowship from the American Heart Association (FAHA) in 2013 because of her excellent contribution in the cardiovascular field.

Recently Dr. Momen completed a course ‘Certificate in Simulation-simulation Instructor Course’ in Penn State College of Medicine. She coordinates several SimMan based teaching for the student pharmacists in ACP. She also performs educational research involving SimLab.

Dr. Momen has published significant number of conference abstracts and scientific articles in peer reviewed journals.

During leisure time, she loves listening music especially sitar and violin as well as Tagore songs and ghazals. She likes travelling to historical places as well as reading books and watching films with historical background. Outing and cooking with family and friends also part of her leisure activities.
