Dr. Marcy Hernick serves the College as Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Assessment, QEP Director and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Dr. Hernick was raised in upstate New York and received her B.S. in Pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1998. She attended graduate school at Purdue University in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology working in the laboratory of Dr. Richard Borch. Here her research was focused on the development of phosphoramidate prodrugs as anticancer agents. After finishing her Ph.D. in 2002, Dr. Hernick completed her postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. Carol Fierke in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. Her postdoctoral studies focused on examining the mechanism and molecular recognition properties of the metal-dependent deacetylase LpxC. Dr. Hernick began her independent research program in 2007 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Virginia Tech prior to joining the faculty at Appalachian College of Pharmacy in 2013. Her research program is currently focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of inositol derivatives in Mycobacterium sp. and the development of inhibitors targeting these enzymes. She has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters in this area.

In her leisure time, Dr. Hernick enjoys politics, movies, and various spectator sports.
