Appalachian College of Pharmacy

Venture Off Campus

The Appalachian College of Pharmacy is nestled in the town of Oakwood in Buchanan County, in the rugged Appalachian Mountains of the southwestern portion of Virginia. The town is small and quiet, perfect for when you need to focus on your pharmacy studies. But the surrounding area has much to offer for a fun evening out or enjoyable day trip.

This area is known for its outdoor activities, such as, fishing, four wheeling, golfing, hiking, hunting, mountain biking, snow skiing, water skiing and whitewater rafting.  It is also home to several festivals, museums, musical venues, and some of America’s best theatre.  For more information about the area view the website of “The Heart of Appalachia”, the region’s tourism board at www.heartofappalachia.com, or review the list below of places of interest within approximately two (2) hours’ drive of the Appalachian College of Pharmacy:

Enjoy eight miles of maintained trails along the Scenic Clinch River, the Sugar Hill Loop Trail and Oxbow Lake that start at the Oxbow Dam in St. Paul, Virginia.

For the serious adventurer, whitewater rafting is available on the raging rapids of the Russell Fork River. Each Saturday and Sunday during the first four full weekends in October, water is released from the John Flannagan Dam and Reservoir, creating world class rapids on the Russell Fork through the Breaks Gorge. Different sections of the river provide varying levels of difficulty. Rafters will find Class Two and Three rapids closer to the Flannagan Dam area, and rapids up to Class Six through the Breaks Park area on sections of the river where names like “twenty stitches,” “broken nose,” and “triple drop,” give some sense of the adventure to be had here. The gradient of the Russell Fork ranges from five feet per mile to an unbelievable 180 feet per mile. One violent 75-foot stretch, aptly named “El Horrendo,” is considered one of the most difficult in the East.

If you choose to take on the Russell Fork do be cautious; the river can be unkind to all but experienced paddlers. It is known throughout the rafting world as some of the wildest, most difficult whitewater anywhere and is best experienced with a guide or outfitter familiar with the river. The park doesn’t offer boat rentals or guided rafting, but many outfitters visit the Russell Fork each October to provide those services. Those interested in riding the rapids should locate an outfitter and plan their excursion ahead of time.

It rises in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia, in the eastern Buchanan County, near Grundy.  It flows west into Pike County, Kentucky, where it receives the Russell Fork River and is impounded to form Fishtrap Lake reservoir, then northwest past Pikeville and Prestonsburg, Kentucky.

West Virginia Lakes

Bluestone Lake
Bluestone is probably one of the most well-known lakes in the entire Mountain State.  Easy to get to from I-77 or I-64, Bluestone has boating, fishing, camping, and all the other things you’d look for in a lake vacation.  Start at Hinton, one of the most historic of America’s railroad towns.

Summersville Lake
Right above the world famous Gauley River is the pristine Summersville Lake.  Sometimes called the “Little Bahamas of the East” by divers, Summersville is probably the best place on the list to chill out a little.  There’s a nice beach there too, if you’ve got the desire to hit the water but don’t have a boat.

Lake Stephens
If you’re close to Beckley and looking to add a little play to your work, do not miss an opportunity to go to Lake Stephens.  It’s only nine miles away, and sits right in the middle of almost 2000 acres of hardwood forest.  Lake Stephens is the site of several fishing tournaments throughout the season- and there’s a good reason for that.

RD Bailey Lake

On the good side of the West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia tri-state, RD Bailey Lake is a beautiful mountain reservoir next to the town of Justice, WV.  Right on the Guyandotte River, RD Bailey is remote and folded within the steep mountains of Wyoming County.  If you want to really get away, game on.

Plum Orchard Lake
It’s actually Plum Orchard Wildlife Management Area, but what it can really be described as is secret.  Most people bypass Plum Orchard Lake on the West Virginia Turnpike, missing this small gem just outside of Scarbro.  There are three boat launches for easy access, and you’ll find plenty of room out on the water as well.

Rock Climbing Instruction in Virginia
At OWLS, we take pride in our rock climbing courses and high-quality instruction.  Our instructors have decades of climbing and outdoor experience and most of them have been trained by the American Mountain Guides Association.  We offer courses ranging from the novice to the advanced and teach rope techniques for efficiency on long and short routes. Get out of the Gym.

We are the only climbing school that teaches lead climbing by actually letting the students lead in a safe environment. We are the only outfitter that is permitted to guide in the George Washington National Forest and Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  We instruct on the only multi-pitch climbing areas in Virginia.  The Goat Path at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia is a great 300’ climb that allows you to get a feel of multi-pitch climbing on a low angle slab.  This climb is one of the more than 26 developed cliffs, on Wintergreen Resort’s Nature Preserve that will challenge nearly any ability level.

For those looking for more challenge, the imposing 200’ Love Gap, off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, offers more challenging multi-pitch climbing.  These locations see little traffic, so the only eyes on you will be that of your group and the several Hawks and Turkey Vultures that will be gliding at your eye level.

OWLS Climbing Program and School is simply Virginia’s largest, safest, and most comprehensive rock climbing program, period!

Southwest Montana’s only USFS permitted program through Montana Alpine Guides. Our permitted and private climb sites rival both Seneca Rocks and Joshua Tree. On all of our courses you will learn safety, technique, equipment and gear identification, belaying, rappelling, basic knots, meteorology, and other various skills.
