American Chemical
Society
The student branch of the American Chemical Society was instituted to stimulate
students' interest in chemical research. The society is often able to secure
well-known speakers for their meetings. The American Chemical Society also
encourages students to pursue research projects and to present papers before
chemical organizations and related professional groups.
Phi Lambda Sigma
Phi Lambda Sigma is a national pharmacy leadership society, which encourages,
recognizes and promotes leadership in the field of pharmacy. The society selects
members on the basis of their service to and leadership in the advancement
of pharmacy.
National Honor Society of Rho
Chi
Rho Chi, founded in 1917, is the only national scholastic honor society for
pharmacy and holds membership in the Association of College Honor Societies
along with such groups as Phi Beta Kappa. Gamma Gamma chapter at Albany College
of Pharmacy was formed in 1976. The fundamental objective of Rho Chi has been
the advancement of the pharmaceutical sciences through the encouragement and
recognition of sound scholarship. Rho Chi also seeks to increase the awareness
of the ethical and social responsibilities of the profession and thereby to
enhance the prestige of the profession. Those students who are in the top
20 percent of their class and who have attained a numerical average of 85
percent are eligible for membership after completing six semesters of scholastic
work toward the degree granted by ACP.
American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists
The mission of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is to be the collective voice of student pharmacists, to provide opportunities for professional growth and to envision and actively promote the future of pharmacy. APhA-ASP membership is open to students in all class years and includes participation in the local chapter (at Albany College of Pharmacy), the state chapter (the Student Pharmacists Society of the State of New York) and the national organization (American Pharmacists Association). Members are involved directly in patient care projects, including Operation Diabetes, Operation Immunization and the Heartburn Awareness Challenge. Members can attend local chapter meetings as well as the APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting each fall and the APhAAnnual Meeting each spring. Membership includes access to professional development resources, including Student Pharmacist Magazine, Pharmacy Today, Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, the APhA DrugInfoLine newsletter and www.pharmacist.com. APhA-ASP also promotes opportunities for career guidance, networking and leadership development, including holding chapter office, regional office and/or national office.
