The Appalachian College of Pharmacy is located at Oakwood, in Buchanan Ccounty, which is in the rugged Appalachian Mountains of the southwesterrn portion of Virginia. Oakwood is located in the midst of a beautiful deciduous forest in the heartland of Virginia's energy industry. Buchanan County is the most heavily forested county in Virginia and regularly leads the state in both coal and gas production. Unfortunately, Buchanan County is also one of Virginia's poorest counties, having a per capita income of $12,788.00 and 23.26% of its population living below the pverty line in 2000. The Appalachian College of Pharmacy is situate twelve (12) miles along U.S. Highway Route number 460 east from Grundy, Virginia, which is the county seat of Buchanan County, and home to the Appalachian School of Law, the Boothe Center and Mountain Mission School. - Approximately sixty-two (62) miles from Pikeville, Kentucky, which is a regional shopping, industrial and medical center.
