Jim Viers, Ph.D
Jim Viers was born in Buchanan County and attended Warfork Elementary School at Russell Prater and Grundy High School before his family moved to Dickenson County, where he graduated from Ervinton High School. He received a B.A. in chemistry from Berea, an M.S. in chemistry from Wake Forest, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University in 1971. He joined the faculty in chemistry at Virginia Tech that year, and spent his entire working career there. He retired in 2005 as Associate Department Head and Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Education in the Chemistry Department.
He has spent his retirement playing golf, babysitting with his granddaughters, and playing at working by maintaining a long term interest in real estate with Prudential Radford and Associates Realtors in Blacksburg.
