Graduate Education
The Office of Graduate Education was initiated in January 2007 with the intent to oversee, develop and coordinate a series of new graduate degree programs as well as to foster the ongoing development of ACP's postgraduate professional residency and fellowship training programs. Throughout its long history, ACP has mainly focused its efforts in the education of pharmacy students. More recently, ACP has developed additional undergraduate programs, such as certification in cytotechnology and a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. In the last few years, ACP has developed collaborative joint degree programs, such as the Pharm.D./ M.B.A. in conjunction with Union Graduate College . Until now, ACP has never offered its own graduate degree program.
In 2007, ACP developed its first three Master of Science degree programs and submitted these to the New York State Education Department. In the summer of 2007, the first two of these programs were successfully registered by NYSED: the M.S. in Pharmacy Administration and the M.S. in Health Outcomes Research. The Office of Graduate Education is currently in the process of developing additional MS programs.
ACP has also provided both residency and fellowship training programs for pharmacy graduates. Generally, residencies are one- to two-year clinical training programs for new graduates. Under the supervision of a preceptor, residents obtain in-depth training in either general clinical pharmacy care activities or in a specialized area of clinical practice (such as endocrinology or community pharmacy practice).
In general, fellowships are two-year programs that specifically train either new or recent graduates in clinical-research techniques in a specialized area (such as nephrology, infectious diseases).
The Office of Graduate Education is committed to the ongoing development of both training programs, and is currently coordinating the accreditation and peer-review of its offerings.
