Annual White Coat Ceremony

Third-year students participate in annual rite of professional passage

ALBANY , N.Y. (September 29, 2006) - Approximately 200 members of ACP's Class of 2010 made the ceremonial passage into the professional years of the Doctor of Pharmacy program Friday during the annual White Coat Ceremony.

The ceremony for third-year students marks the official start of the professional years in the six-year Pharm.D. program. An ACP tradition, the ceremony recognizes both the students' achievements during the first two years of general studies in the basic sciences and humanities, and the core values that will shape them as pharmacy professionals. The Pledge of Professionalism is an important symbolic moment in the ceremony.

"The profession of pharmacy is one that demands adherence to a set of ethical principles," the pledge concludes. "These high ideals are necessary to insure the quality of care extended to the patients I serve. As a student of pharmacy, I believe this does not start with graduation; rather it begins with my membership in this professional college community. Therefore, I will strive to uphold this pledge as I advance toward full membership in the profession."

Friday's ceremony in the Albert M. White Gymnasium was attended by about 850 friends and family members. David B. Flashover '69, a member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy and the former chairman, delivered the keynote address.

Founded in 1881, Albany College of Pharmacy is the oldest pharmacy school in New York state and one of the only private, independent pharmacy schools in the United States . The college has a long history of serving its students and health care professionals as one of the premier pharmacy colleges in the nation. The college now enters a new era in health care with a focus not only on pharmacy, but also on pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical technology and research.
