Panthers end Clinton hex to win NIC title
ACP 1, Clinton CC 0
Monday, October 16
The
six-year string of frustration is over.
ACP finally ended Clinton Community College 's stranglehold on the Northern Independence Conference championship, making Alissa Phillips' breakaway goal early in the second half stand up for a dramatic 1-0 victory on the previously vexed pitch in Plattsburgh.
Just 11 days after their most recent heartbreak against Clinton - a The Panthers celebrate their first title in six years.
deflating 3-2 loss to end the regular
season - the Panthers were back at the scene of so many recent disappointments. The Panthers lost the conference championship game at Clinton each of the last three years, including a 3-2 overtime defeat in 2004 and 2-0 last year.
This time, the result was different as ACP ended a five-game losing streak against its arch nemesis and won the NIC title for the first time since 2000.
"Just a tremendous game, on both sides," said coach Jack Beckett. "Those last 30 minutes felt like a couple of hours, but I'm just so proud of the team. We lost a tough one up here a couple weeks ago but we came back like champions."
Both teams missed good scoring chances in a scoreless first half, and the Panthers (8-4) broke through just 2:29 into the second half. A through pass from Sarah Gruber sent Phillips in alone against Clinton keeper Becky Abbott. Phillips got off a blistering shot that Abbott got a piece of, but not enough.
An outstanding defensive effort the rest of the way made the 1-0 lead stand up.
"You have to give Albany Pharmacy a lot of credit," said Clinton coach Donna Dixon. "They're a good team and to beat a good team six times in a row, well ... We played as hard as we could; they just took us out of our game. They didn't let us get into any kind of attack."
Meaghan Owen made nine saves in goal for the Panthers to record the shutout, her fourth of the season. Abbott made 11 saves for the Cougars (10-5-3) as ACP held a 13-11 edge in shots.

ACP took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Sarah Gruber converted a penalty kick. Brandy Barniak gave the Panthers an impressive 2-0 lead with a goal just over eight minutes before halftime. But the Cougars regrouped and needed just over 16 minutes to tie the game, closing to 2-1 on Stephanie Brodi's goal in the seventh minute of the second half and tying it on Saania Duprey's goal in the 17th minute.

Green Mountain College 3, ACP 0
Saturday, September 16
Playing at home against an undefeated Division III opponent proved too much to handle as Green Mountain College defeated ACP 4-0.
The Panthers (2-2) hung tight for most of the first half until the visitors finally broke through in the 38 th minute. Green Mountain was able to capitalize on ACP's lack of experience in the midfield in the second half after the Panthers lost captain Kim Whalley to a fractured wrist shortly after halftime.
Hudson Valley CC 1, ACP 0
Tuesday, September 12
After going back and forth at each other for almost 80 minutes, Hudson Valley Community College scored the game's only goal as it handed aCP a tough 1-0 defeat on the road.
The Panthers (2-1) had numerous chances, but could not find the back of the net as they dropped their first game of the young season. The midfield, led by Amanda Vincentini and Kim Whalley, controlled action for most of the game. Meaghan Owen held tough in goal, making 12 saves for the Panthers.
