Student Center Photo Gallery
Week 13 (Nov. 29-Dec. 3, 2004)
First you dig it. Then you fill it in. Then you dig it again. That's the process necessary to prepare this site for the foundation of the 54,000-square-foot Student Center. Because ravines on the property were filled in years ago with cinders, gravelly material inadequte for supporting a large structure, much of the property will have to be excavated twice to prepare the ground.
Once the old material is excavated the hole will be refilled with dirt that meets strict sift standards and will be trucked in from other sites. It then will be covered with about 3,000 yards of the heavier clay soil from this site to pack it down. After about a month, the site will be excavated again, though not to the same depth, leaving a firm, stable base for the foundation.
