Panthers finish season fourth in NIC tournament
Friday and Saturday, February 17-18
Third-place Game
North Country CC 68, ACP 53
ACP finished the season with a 68-53 defeat to North Country Community College in the third-place game of the Northern Independence Conference tournament in the Albert M. White Gymnasium.
Playing without three starters (Ramy Ramzy, John Adamchick and Graig Reed), the third-seeded Panthers (6-22) simply did not have enough firepower to stay with the Saints, the regular-season champions who were shocked by Clinton Community College in Friday night's semifinals. Fourth-seeded Clinton went on to beat second-seeded Paul Smith's College for the title Saturday.
Bryan Jones, who was named to the NIC first team, scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead ACP. Adam Zalewski played his best game of the season as he scored 13 points. Trevor Dupont hit five 3-pointers and led the Saints with 17 points. The Panthers held conference MVP Elfred Miller to six points.
Ramy Ramzy and Ryan Miglin were named to the NIC second team for the Panthers. Ramzy sat out the game with a knee injury sustained in the semifinal loss to Paul Smith's. Miglin finished off the season by scoring nine points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
In the NIC championship, Clinton scored its second upset in as many days as it defeated Paul Smith's 75-71. First-team All-NIC member Phillip Barnes scored a tournament-high 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Clinton to the championship.
Semifinals
Paul Smith's College 79, ACP 60
A cold-shooting first half left ACP with too big a deficit to overcome in a 79-60 loss to Paul Smith's College in the Northern Independence Conference semifinals in the Albert M. White Gymnasium.
The third-seeded Panthers (6-21) hit just 7 of 37 shots in the first half (19 percent), negating a solid defensive performance that helped them limit second-seeded Paul Smith's to 36 percent shooting in the first half. ACP trailed 28-19 at the break and couldn't close the gap in spite of 58 percent shooting in the second half.
Bryan Jones led ACP with 22 points and Ramy Ramzy had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Andrew Thompson scored 25 points to lead Paul Smith's into Saturday's championship game at ACP against fourth-seeded Clinton Community College, which stunned top-seeded North Country Community College 69-64 in the second semifinal.
ACP 78, Clinton CC 67
Monday, February 13
Freshmen Bryan Jones and Dennis Samuel scored 16 points apiece and turned in excellent defensive efforts in the second half to lead ACP to a key 78-67 Northern Independence Conference road victory over Clinton Community College in the last game of the regular season.
The Panthers (6-20 overall, 2-4 NIC) clinched third place in the conference and will play second-seeded Paul Smith's College in the NIC semifinals Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the Albert M. White Gymnasium. Regular-season champion North Country Community College will meet Clinton, the fourth seed, in Friday's other semifinal at 8:00 p.m. The consolation and championship games are Saturday at noon and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
ACP trailed 44-40 at halftime Monday after an up-and-down first half. Coach Craig Tynan emphasized defense and rebounding at halftime, and the Panthers responded. With Jones and Samuel turning in strong man-to-man efforts in ACP's triangle-and-two defense, the Panthers dominated the second half en route to the season sweep of Clinton.
John Adamchick, Michael Reddick and Ramy Ramzy also scored in double figures in ACP's balanced offensive attack.
New Hampshire Tech 78, ACP 63
Sunday, February 12
In its last home game of the regular season, ACP hung tough with the defending national small-college champion before falling 78-63 to New Hampshire Tech in the Albert M. White Gymnasium.
Bryan Jones led the Panthers (5-20) with 19 points, Ramy Ramzy had 12 points and seven rebounds and John Adamchick added 10 points. Adam Zalewski contributed seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
Trailing 40-37 at halftime, the Panthers took their first lead on a Jones jumper that made it 41-40 early in the second half. Jones hit another jumper to put ACP up 45-44, but the Capitals (25-4) responded with a 15-2 run to take control. Chris Lawes led the Capitals, the 2005 United States Collegiate Athletic Association national champions, with 35 points, including a 13-for-13 performance at the foul line.
ACP visits Northern Independence Conference rival Clinton Community College on Monday looking for a win to clinch the third seed in next weekend's conference tournament, which will be played in the White Gymnasium.
North Country CC 92, ACP 68
Thursday, February 9
North Country Community College used stifling pressure defense and an up-tempo offense to offset another strong performance from Ramy Ramzy and a break-through game from Andrew Besada in a 92-68 Northern Independence Conference win over ACP.
Ramzy scored 21 points and Besada reached double figures with 11 to lead the Panthers (5-19 overall, 1-4 NIC), but the Saints' aggressive style on both ends proved too much for ACP to handle. The Panthers committed seven turnovers in the first five minutes, leading to 11 points by the Saints. ACP finished with 33 turnovers for the game.
The Panthers are at home Sunday against New Hampshire Tech, the defending United States Small College Athletic Association national champion, and on the road Monday for a critical conference game. The Panthers need a win at Clinton Community College to gain the third seed in the NIC Tournament next weekend at ACP.
Berkeley College 76, ACP 52
Sunday, February 5
After dropping a tough conference game to Paul Smith's College on the road, ACP lost its second game in as many days, a 76-52 decision to Berkeley College in the Albert M. White Gymnasium.
Hanging tough throughout most of the first half, the Panthers pulled to within 20-19 on Ramy Ramzy's layup with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The visitors finished the first half strong and took a 39-25 lead into the locker room. Berkeley went on a 17-1 run to open the second half and the Panthers (5-18) never threatened again.
Berkeley was led by James Dorismond who had 24 points, including four 3-pointers. The Panthers were led by Dan Durr who had nine points and seven rebounds off the bench. Andrew Besada hit both of this 3-pointers and inished with eight points. Emad Menkarios also had eight points. ACP was forced to play without starter Graig Reed, who sustained an ankle injury in warm-ups prior to the game.
Paul Smith's College 70, ACP 55
Saturday, February 4
After a long ride up the Northway, ACP faced a hot-shooting opponent and fell behind early en route to a 70-55 Northern Independence Conference loss to Paul Smith's College.
The Bearcats built a 50-27 halftime lead and, in spite of a solid defensive effort by ACP in the second half, were able to maintain the double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Freshman Bryan Jones led ACP (5-17 overall, 1-3 NIC) with 20 points. John Adamchick had a solid 10 points to go along with his strong defensive presence in the paint.
ACP 88, WOLBI 64
Thursday, February 2
In what Coach Craig Tynan described as "the most complete game we have played in the last two or three seasons," ACP got 25 points from Bryan Jones and double-doubles from its inside tandem of Ramy Ramzy and John Adamchick in an 88-64 victory over Word of Life Bible Institute in the Albert M. White Gymnasium.
Trying to avenge an early season defeat, ACP (5-16) took a two-point lead at halftime but quickly opened the game up in the second half with a 13-5 run.
Jones connected on six 3-pointers on his way to game-high scoring honors. Ramzy had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Adamchick had 13 points and 11 boards. Ryan Miglin also had eight rebounds as ACP dominated inside, outscoring Word of Life 40-16 in the paint and building a 53-28 rebounding advantage. "We showed tremendous energy on defense combined with unselfish and confident play on offense," said Coach Tynan. "It was just exciting to watch these guys come together and play at this high of a level."

The Panthers (4-15) fell behind early but clawed back to within eight in the second half. Ramzy led ACP with 21 points and Adamchick contributed 20. Chris Distefano had 18 points and Mike Donnelly had 17 to lead the Bears.
ACP 67, Clinton CC 64

The visitors stormed out to an early 22-6 with some hot shooting from 3-point land. Spurred on by Ramzy's inside presence and the home fans in attendance, ACP (4-14 overall, 1-2 NIC) made a run. Mike Reddick hit a 3-pointer with eight minutes remaining in the game to give the Panthers their first lead.
John Adamchick and Dennis Samuel, who both joined the team for the Spring semester, also were key contributors. Adamchick had 10 points and five rebounds and Samuel had nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Nick Darrah had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Clinton.
Rensselaer JV 66, ACP 61
Sunday, January 22
ACP's best defensive effort of the season led to a compelling finish, but the Panthers fell just short in their efforts to avenge a close December defeat with a 66-61 loss on the road against the Rensselaer JV.
A 3-pointer to tie late in the game drew iron but didn't fall and the Redhawks clinched the victory with two free throws. Coach Craig Tynan said it was one of the best games the Panthers (3-14) have played all season and certainly the team played well enough to win.
Newcomer Andrew Besada came up big on offense but even more important was his ball handling. The team combined for a season low eight turnovers after committing 33 in a loss to Briarcliffe College and the Panthers dictated the pace of the game. Bryan Jones led the way offensively and the other team members all had solid efforts.
"I was very impressed with our defensive effort," Coach Tynan said. "We held a strong team that had some D-III players in check for 40 minutes and gave ourselves a chance to win. I hope we can continue this strong effort for the remainder of our schedule."
Briarcliffe College 64, ACP 31
Sunday, January 15
It was a tough travel day and ACP found it tough going in an undesirable setting for the game. The offense generated more turnovers (33) than points in a 64-31 loss to Briarcliffe College .
The Panthers' defensive pressure was good as they held the opponent to 34 in the first half and 30 in the second, but they just couldn't get anything going on offense. Newcomer, John Adamchick led the Panthers (3-13) with 10 points and was the only player in double figures.
Panthers second in Green Mountain tournament
Wednesday, January 10 and Thursday, January 11
Championship Game
Fisher College 84, ACP 72
After pulling out a last-second victory in the opening round of the Green Mountain Invitational, ACP was out of miracles in the championship game, dropping an 84-72 decision to Fisher College .
Fisher came out strong from the field, shooting 57 percent for the game, while taking a 45-29 lead into halftime. The Panthers (3-12) outscored Fisher in the second half, 43-39, but could never get close enough to rattle the Falcons, who advanced to the final with an 86-69 win over host Green Mountain. Fisher, of Boston, held a huge advantage from the foul line, going to the line 25 times, while the Panthers only had three foul shots.
Graig Reed led ACP in scoring with 19, including 3-of-5 from 3-point land, and added five assists. In his second game with the Panthers, John Adamchick played another strong game with 18 points. Ramy Ramzy added 12 points and six rebounds. Michael Newcomb and Steven Perry each had 25 points to lead Fisher.
Opening Round
ACP 62, Maine-Fort Kent 59
A four-week layoff and a strong showing by two newcomers helped ACP defeat Maine-Fort Kent 62-59 in the opening round of the Green Mountain College Invitational.
In his first game for the Panthers, 6-foot-6 forward/center John Adamchick scored 10 points, pulled down seven rebounds and made four consecutive free throws down the stretch to help the Panthers (3-11) hold off the Bengals. Adamchick and Dennis Samuel, who had six points and four steals, joined the team for the second semester.
Graig Reed had 10 points and Ryan Miglin had nine rebounds as ACP had 11 players score to provide a balanced scoring attack.
Rensselaer JV 75, ACP 68
Wednesday, December 7
ACP dropped its second straight home game to close the Fall semester portion of the season, a 75-68 loss to crosstown rival Rensselaer JV despite strong efforts from the two leading big men.
Ryan Miglin finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Ramy Ramzy scored 16 points and grabbed 12 boards. With another slow start, ACP (2-11) trailed by 13 at halftime and didn't have enough outside shooting to climb all the way back from that deficit.
Rensselaer had a balanced attack, with five players finishing in double figures and connecting for nine 3-pointers for the game.
"I thought we outplayed RPI in many areas, but it came down to turnovers and missed free throws, which have held back the team much of the season," Coach Craig Tynan said. "We made just as many baskets and completely outrebounded them but gave up too many points at the line and gave away some scoring opportunities with turnovers.
"We will be ready for them when we go to their place in January."
Keuka College 107, ACP 62
Monday, December 5
Keuka College, a strong Division III opponent, hit nine 3-pointers and shot 56 percent from behind the arc to remain unbeaten with a 107-62 victory at ACP.

North Country (4-3, 1-1) had balanced scoring as Karl Sims had 18 points, Julian Howser and Elfred Miller each had 17, and Marques Gilbert had 14.
Davis College 97, ACP 89 OT
Monday, November 21
The combination of its own poor performance at the foul line and hot long-range shooting by visiting Davis College sent ACP to a 97-89 overtime defeat despite strong performances from Bryan Jones and Ryan Miglin.
Jones scored 27 points, including five 3-pointers, and Miglin added 23 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers (1-8), who rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to force the extra period. Jeff Wright led the Falcons (4-3) with 36 points, including seven 3-pointers, as they they avenged an ACP victory at Davis, in Binghamton, on November 12.
Ramy Ramzy had eight points and eight rebounds for ACP. Mike Collins also hit consecutive 3-pointers during the Panthers' second-half rally. But ACP shot just 16-of-40 from the foul line, compared to 35-of-45 for Davis.

It was like déjà vu all over again for ACP and the College of St. Joseph in the consolation game of the SUNY Institute of Technology Tip-off Classic in Utica. Unfortunately.
Playing the Vermonters for the second time in four days, ACP once again jumped to a quick early lead but could not hold on, falling 84-68 to the Fighting Saints, who won 80-61 in Albany on November 15.
Freshman Bryan Jones led the Panthers (1-7) with 14 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Ryan Miglin had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Ramy Ramzy added 14 points and Michael Reddick scored 13.
The Panthers led 9-0 after five minutes, but St. Joseph chipped its way back and took a 44-41 halftime lead. ACP kept it close throughout the second half, but untimely turnovers cost the Panthers opportunities to overtake the Fighting Saints.
Opening Round
SUNYIT 98, ACP 48
It was a tale of two halves for ACP against the hosts in the opening round of the SUNY Institute of Technology Tip-off Classic in Utica.
On the road against a solid Division III opponent, the Panthers battled gamely for one half and trailed by just seven at halftime. But SUNYIT overwhelmed ACP with pressure defense and deadly shooting in the final 20 minutes of a 98-48 victory.
Sophomore Graig Reed and freshman Bryan Jones led the Panthers (1-6) with 16 points and 14 points, respectively. Their hot shooting and overall solid performance kept ACP close throughout the first half. Ryan Miglin also turned in a strong defensive effort with five blocked shots against SUNYIT's big men.
SUNYIT took control quickly after the intermission, hitting nine 3-point shots in the second half and rattling the Panthers with up-tempo defensive pressure.
College of St. Joseph 80, ACP 61
Tuesday, November 15
ACP used hot shooting from long range to open a big early lead, but could not hold off the College of St. Joseph in Vermont as the visitors scored an 80-61 victory in the Albert M. White Gymnasium.
Nick Loomis hit six of St. Joseph 's 12 3-pointers as the Fighting Saints (1-1) overcame ACP's early 18-8 advantage.
Bryan Jones, Graig Reed, Mike Reddick and Emad Menkarios each hit 3-pointers to help the Panthers (1-5) to their fast start. Jones led the Panthers with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Reed finished with 13 points and six rebounds while Ramy Ramzy had10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
"I was happy with the overall effort, from everyone on the team," Coach Craig Tynan said. "We attacked offensively from the opening tip but St. Joe's hit some really tough shots. There wasn't much we could do about some of their 3-pointers."
ACP 67, Davis College 41
Saturday, November 12
Emad Menkarios and Michael Reddick scored 15 points apiece to lead ACP to its first win of the season, a 67-41 road victory over Davis College.

Adirondack CC 73, ACP 71

Paul Smith's College 83, ACP 45
Tuesday, November 8
A 12-0 deficit to start the game proved too much for ACP to overcome in an 83-45 loss to Paul Smith's College in the Northern Independence Conference opener for both teams.
Ramy Ramzy led the Panthers (0-3 overall, 0-1 NIC) with 10 points and Ryan Miglin had eight. The Panthers fought hard but could not overcome the hot shooting and tough defense from their conference rival.

Adam Zalewski led the Panthers (0-2) with seven points. Ramy Ramzy led the team in rebounding with seven. Preston Bell led Morrisville (2-0) with 14 points. Terrel Armstead had 12 and Dodrick Spencer added 10.
WOLBI 63, ACP 53
Tuesday, November 1
A second-half rally fell short as ACP dropped a 63-53 season-opening decision at home to Word of Life Bible Institute.
Ryan Miglin and Ramy Ramzy both had 16 points to lead ACP, while Ramzy finished with a double-double with 12 rebounds. WOLBI was led by Jon Grim with 16 points. Derek Hummel chipped in 14. ACP Coach Craig Tynan was impressed with the play of both Miglin and Ramzy.
"I thought our big guys played well and that needs to continue the entire year," Tynan said. "We need them to score for us to compete against the better teams we will play."
WOLBI (1-0) raced out to a commanding 37-24 halftime lead as ACP came out cold from the field. Midway through the second half the Panthers, urged on by the strong show of fan support, stormed back and when Bryan Jones hit the team's first 3-pointer of the game the deficit was cut to six. But that was as close as the Panthers would get.
WOLBI finished 17 of 18 from the foul line to squash any hope of an ACP comeback. ACP returns to action Sunday when Morrisville State visits the Albert M. White Gymnasium for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.

ACP opens the regular season November 1 at home against Word of Life Bible Institute.
