ACP recognizes student research excellence

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 19, 2007) - ACP held its first-ever Pharmaceutical Sciences Awards Ceremony on April 19 at the Fort Orange Club in Albany, recognizing outstanding achievement in research among this growing cohort of undergraduate students at the College.

"The First Annual BSPS Research Awards Ceremony served to underscore the efforts of our Pharmaceutical Sciences students and the dedication of their faculty research advisors in support of student research at ACP," said Michael Raley, Ph.D., director of pharmaceutical sciences. "It is wonderful to see the BSPS program continue to expand in student numbers, but, more importantly, in the level of collaborative research activity between the students and the faculty of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

"The close working relationship between faculty and students to promote laboratory research is a real strength of the BSPS program. The awards ceremony served as a wonderful showcase of these efforts and accomplishments."

Graduating seniors Tamar Karian and Brian Myer presented their research to the group, which included 17 students in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program. Tamar and Brian were among six students to receive awards for research excellence.

Faculty and staff also were well represented, including Dean Mehdi Boroujerdi, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Director of Pharmaceutical Sciences Michael Raley, Ph.D., Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Acting Chair William Millington, Ph.D., and Vice President of Institutional Advancement Vicki DiLorenzo.

The awards ceremony was conceived by Dean Boroujerdi as a way to provide students in the Pharmaceutical Sciences program an opportunity for recognition similar to the annual White Coat Ceremony for the College's third-year Doctor of Pharmacy students.

The research awards totaled approximately $7,500, part of an overall effort by the College, led by the Office of Institutional Advancement, to develop corporate, alumni and other financial support for all ACP students to receive incentives to pursue research and professional development opportunities.

The six students receiving research awards were (faculty advisors listed in parentheses):

Tamar Karian (Richard Dearborn, Ph.D.): Mapping and Developmental Analysis of Novel Eph Receptor Signaling Pathway Genes.

Neil Mandalaywala (Richard Dearborn, Ph.D.): Analysis of Vitamin D3 Up-regulated Protein 1 (VDUP-1) Function during Embryonic Gliogenesis in Drosophila.

Joshua Marlow (Carlos Feleder, Ph.D.): The Central Nervous System Mediates LPS Hypotension during Septic Shock.

Brian Myer (Carlos Feleder, Ph.D.): Mapping the Pathway of Hypotension in Septic Shock: The Role of the Vagus and TNF- a.

Alexandra Rehfus (Robert Levin, Ph.D.): Effect of Letrozole on Female Rabbit Urinary Bladder Function.

Shaarika Sarasija (Jeffrey Voigt, Ph.D.): Regulation of Transcription Factor Activity by VDUP-1.

Congratulations to this year's award recipients and their faculty advisors! ACP already is looking forward to the 2008 awards ceremony, and the continued student research excellence.
