Campus Building Undergoes Changes

The newly named Biosciences Research Building (BRB) will soon be in full operation, housing research and teaching facilities and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Faculty members and researchers are moving into new work spaces over the summer and students are already working in the building, which previously served as the Pharmaceutical Research Institute's headquarters.

When the buildout is complete, the BRB will contain biology, pharmaceutics, chemistry and biochemistry labs, as well as classrooms for required and elective courses. There will also be a lounge and cubicles for study and relaxation.

Inaugural Nature-ceuticals Symposium a Success

Last month, ACP hosted its inaugural Nature-ceuticals Symposium, which attracted a strong turnout of scientists, clinicians and producers from around the country to discuss the use and impact of natural products.

David M. Eisenberg, M.D., director of the division for research and education in complementary and integrative medical therapies at Harvard Medical School, gave the keynote address, and a special Japanese tea ceremony closed the symposium.

Organizers are looking at the possibility of hosting a follow-up event in 2010.

Reunion Weekend Brings Record Number of Alums Back to Campus

ACP's 2008 Reunion Weekend brought more than 150 alums to campus. Celebrating their 50th reunion, the Class of '58 was particularly well represented with 40 people.

Activities included campus and city tours, the 50th Reunion Dinner, a barbeque with fireworks, dedications (including the Kirkpatrick Suite [above] and Robison Dining Hall), a reminiscence at Ralph's and the President's Luncheon. Next year's Reunion Weekend is scheduled for June 5-7.

FONSMZ Golf Tourney LogoSorensen-Zeolla Golf Tournament Players Honor Late Friends' Memories

The first annual Noah Sorensen and Mario Zeolla Golf Tournament drew more than 150 of their friends and colleagues to the Mohawk River Golf Course.

"This was more than we could expect," Mike Zeolla '01 and Mario's brother, told a local paper. "For an inaugural event, we could not be more pleased. It shows how much these two guys were loved."

Proceeds from the golf event will go to the Grand Circle Foundation and the Mario M. Zeolla '97 Memorial Scholarship at ACP. The Grand Circle Foundation funds an orphanage in Hue, Vietnam, an organization Noah Sorensen '97 supported.

For more information on Sorensen, Zeolla or the golf event, go to www.fonsmz.org.

Summer Visitation Days

Each year ACP hosts "Summer Visitation Days" to give high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore our growing, vibrant campus. It's also a great opportunity for these students and their families to learn more about what ACP has to offer.

Below is a list of the remaining 2008 Summer Visitation Days. Please do what you can to help make their visit a good one!

  • Tuesday, August 5
  • Thursday, August 7
  • Tuesday, August 12
  • Thursday, August 14
  • Tuesday, August 19
  • Thursday, August 21

And remember, the campus community is invited to enjoy ice cream with the students at the conclusion of their visits. Ice cream is available from "Mr. Ding a Ling" who will be parked outside the Student Center at 11:45 a.m. on each of the above days.

Summer Enrichment Program Underway

The annual summer enrichment program, in which rising high school seniors pursue research on campus, is currently underway. The program is overseen by David Clarke, Ph.D., Chair of the Dept. of Arts and Sciences.

In addition to the research activities, the six-week program features "field trips" to Albany Medical Center, Albany Molecular, Regeneron and Mallinckrodt. ACP faculty involved with the program include Carlton Campbell, Ph.D., Leon Cosler, Ph.D., Martha Hass, Ph.D., Luciana Lopes, Ph.D., PRI Director Shaker Mousa, Ph.D., Abdelhadi Rebbaa , Ph.D. and HaiAn Zheng, Pharm.D. Angela Sheehan, R.N., director of clinical research information at AMC, is also presenting.

Five students (representing Albany and Troy high schools) will present their projects on Friday, August 15 at 10 a.m. in Classroom 207. The campus is welcome to attend.

ACP Academy to Host Summer Session

A special two-week session of the ACP Academy program will take place August 4-8 and August 11-15. As with the program run during the academic year, the summer session is designed to stimulate interest in the math and sciences among disadvantaged youths from the community. The program participants are mentored by ACP students.

Students participating in this session will have just completed the third grade at the Delaware Community School.

New York to Allow Pharmacist Immunizations

Pending the expected signature of Governor David Paterson, New York State will become the 49th state to permit pharmacists to administer immunizations to patients.

Both the Senate and the Assembly recently voted to pass the bill. The bill and regulations will be written following the Governor's formal approval.
